I will try this again.  Apparently because I had a previous account, I had difficulty getting onto this site.

Thanks for the Encouragement

Filed under: Uncategorized — by patbrown @ 11:48 pm

Thank you, Steve, for your kind words of encouragement.  My husband and I just got done eating supper with my co-teaching colleague who worked with the art teacher and me.  She kept telling me how much work I had done for the group, but I really didn’t recall having done so.  She insisted I had, so maybe she’s right.

Anyway, having her around to refresh my memory of something from two years ago really helped.  We laughed at how I had to do a lot of research to understand the art vocabulary myself.

People will also have to understand and accept that we’re all from different walks of life.  We aren’t all the same as teachers, nor are our roles the same.

Finished at Last

Filed under: Uncategorized — by patbrown @ 8:46 pm

I am finally finished with my room.  I only had about 10 minutes left to close shop when I went in last night, but I found myself feeling sentimental about leaving the room I have been in for the past 5 years.  I feel as if I’m leaving a piece of myself behind–which hopefully for the new occupant I haven’t.

Anyway, I cleaned out the defrosted refrigerator which will go on to another school as soon as the student is assigned to it.  Her mother wants her at one school while some of us feel she’d be better somewhere else.  Often, having one’s child in a building where one works creates more problems than one wants to admit.  What will be will be, however.

I sat at my desk and downloaded information I have yet to read.  I thought I’d read it this a.m. on my way in, but I didn’t get around early enough.  Then, I thought about the new room arrangements.  Early in the day, someone named Randy? called the house to ask what room I was being moved to.  I didn’t know any Randy and wondered if my husband had misunderstood the name–Earl?  Perhaps Scott?  Luckily, he was able to tell the location of ;the room–a kindergarten room just north of the office.

So, I continued sketching things out on a sticky note but didn’t leave it at school.  I figured it would get lost in transition–and perhaps translation.  I was also dreading the walk over to the Illini Union to make arrangements for a group next year.  Apparently, different students have been answering and doing emails for the head honcho and things got lost in translation–really lost.  Rather than explaining over the phone, I said I would walk over to discuss it in person which the head honcho thought was a great idea.  So, after class and before the hike up Mt. Everest (aka 5th Street & Daniel Parking Garage’s top floor) to my van, I’m off to the IU.  This is one major reason why emails don’t always work.

I find myself procrastinating about tonight’s activities.  My body says to rest up, but my guilt says to fulfill your obligations.  And, I need to get with it on my demo.  Each day as it gets closer to my time, I get more concerned about how lamebrain my demo will be, especially compared to the rest.  The only positive thing I can think of is that it’ll be different–way different.

After the First Four Days

Filed under: Uncategorized — by patbrown @ 8:55 pm

Wow!  What a busy week this has been!  I knew we’d be busy, but I didn’t exactly visualize how busy we’d be.  Perhaps after all of the “technical” stuff, things will settle down.  Or, after I finish packing up my classroom for the move to a new one, I’ll feel lots better about everything.

Actually on Monday night, I felt ambitious and went in to work on packing and sorting.  By the time Tuesday late afternoon came, I was bushed so I began reading my book for Book Club A.  On Wednesday after getting my new parking pass, I felt obligated to return to school to complete the process–or to make a bigger dent in the process.  My colleague Mary came over to help while my husband Larry gave his undivided attention to Mary’s only grandchild. The guys went outside until dark and returned to go to the gym to shoot baskets. They both returned with a mutual admiration for each other and discovered a common interest in snacking while Mary and I talked about not overdoing their eating.  Needless to say, we were ignored.

Tonight I am planning on returning to the scene.  There’s not a whole lot left to do–file important papers and pack others for sorting in August.  It’s amazing what one collects over the year.  What Mary and I laughed a lot over were our boxes of IAA materials/portfolios/activities we’ve been collecting each year and filing away with a note attached–“to be sorted.”  We now have quite a collection of those “to be sorted” boxes but we agreed that it would be more fun to do it in August with a new perspective rather than trying to get things done after a rather difficult year.

While in moments of exhaustion, I have considered dropping out, I know I cannot because I’m not a quitter.  I think the weekend will bring new energy for next week.
